That is, I did not like the idea that the hero was so badly scared. I have to say, I struggled with some things in this book. It is now one of my favorite Elizabeth Hoyt books. Yet, the experience was beyond expectations. Anne Flosnik does the narration in her best overdramatic style.īecause of all of the positive reviews on this book, I just knew it was going to be an amazing reading/listening experience. Characteristically, there are a few sentences of a fanciful morality tale at the beginning of each chapter. Lots of plot twists as well as clear descriptions for easy reader visualization. The plot moves along from there, including the predictable erotica, ending with hope for recovery from each of their forms of anguish. She was helped to escape by the wife of another of the war victims, and is to be housekeeper at the castle, even though she is clueless. Enter a frightened but beautiful woman with the two children born to her from the abusive and overbearing duke who had kept her as mistress long after he had tired of her. He became a hermit in his musty old castle, not even answering letters from most people. Bad enough for anyone, but he was a noncombatant there to illustrate a volume of flora and fauna of North America, much like Audubon. This man had one eye put out, severe facial scarring, and two fingers chopped off. Which is why I finally resorted to getting audio, as my paper copies kept getting feet. Every reader that I know was urgently self motivated to read all of them.
The books are interconnected, but the story of each man and the woman who was able to help him out of his pit of despair is complete in itself. One of a four part series involving men who served the English king in what the US knows as the French and Indian War, were betrayed by an unknown person, and each suffered a different kind of torture by the indigenous people there.
